BRIEF HISTORY OF PROSE AND CONS
Prose and Cons Braille Unit started in 1980 inside the maximum security unit of the Nebraska Department of Corrections. Volunteer inmates began learning Braille transcription on their own time. Soon inmates committed more of their time and effort to this worthwhile project and the Unit developed into a full-time business.
In 1985 Cornhusker State Industries, part of the Dept. of Corrections, took over the "braille shop" and added it to other prison industry programs such as; license plate manufacturing, wood shop, soap factory, print shop and other menial, labor oriented programs.
Braille afforded a few inmates, who wished to keep their minds active, a chance to learn and produce a product that was helpful to others in society. Prose and Cons has grown over the years into a shop that employs 35-40 men, and is financially self-supportive. We do not receive any grants or aid and we must charge a fee for all materials that are produced.
Prose and Cons has helped approximately 100 men become certified in literary braille by the Library of Congress, and a few have received certification in Nemeth as well. Some of the men have re-entered society and secured careers in the braille field. Currently the unit has 15 men who are certified braille transcribers. The other inmate workers in the braille unit can read some braille and are used in a supportive role (large print reproduction, tactile diagrams, thermoform reproduction, etc.). The unit is very proud to offer transcribed texts with tactile diagrams for math, geography, science, and any other diagram that can be feasibly re-created in a tactile format.
Over the last twenty years Prose and Cons has tried to adapt to the ever increasing demand for materials for the blind and visually handicapped. We have quadrupled the staff and have tried to keep up with the latest braille technologies. We use braille translation software for most materials (Megadots and ED-IT PC), and emboss with several embossers from Enabling Technologies (including Bookmaker and Braille Express 100 for double-side braille). Because the unit is inside a maximum security prison there are many obstacles to overcome, including access to the internet. We may never be allowed to access the internet, but with the help of organizations like BOOKS FOR THE BLIND, INC. and other organizations that have web sites for the visually impaired, we hope to be able to list and offer our services to more organizations and schools throughout the country and around the world.
